I checked out that website and noticed if you click on the gradient it displays the two colors used to creat it. You can take a screen grab of that and sample the two colors using the layer gradient tool then save as a preset.

  • From the pic it doesn’t look like I would get much of a CPU upgrade for $200. Only point-two ghz. What do you think??

  • Really? Can you buy third-party RAM for MAcBook Pros???

  • Thank you for your suggestion. I’m holding off on doing that big update because my MacBook is so old (Late 2013). Turns out, however, that I think the problem is that my MacBook will only run a 4k monitor at 30hz instead of 60hz. I assumed 30hz would be fine but it seems that may be the reason everything slows down. I finally talked to a guy at B&H that knew is stuff and he said only MacBook Pros 2015 and after can run 4k external monitors. I am returning it and getting a 2.5k monitor my Mac can run at 60hz.

  • It would probably fix the first problem. Not sure how it relates to the other two. Thx

  • Thanks. That would work!
After tinkering with it for awhile, I noticed that when I set it to standard view, there is a tiny vertical black line at the top right of the screen that allows me to grab the invisible other screen and pull it over.

Funny thing is, most the time I can’t see the dropped frame when scrubbing timeline, but it shows up in render!

    Thanks for responding Dave,

It’s not H.264 type footage, but I know the problem you are talking about. That’s not the problem I’m having. I’m using ProRes and MXF files. Both have the issue.

If I time reverse a layer that I have applied time remapping to, the first one or two frames gets cut off when I render sometimes. The frame/s do not appear dropped in the timeline window, however, and sometimes when I adjust the in point it does appear missing!!! Clearly a bug. I wish I knew what the deal is with this because I’ve been using AE for twenty years and just noticing the problem on last two projects.

If you want to do After Effects you can always put together a demo reel showcasing some logo animations from current brands by grabbing free logos and graphics online (Google Images) and adding some background, etc. But if you get a job, people are going to expect you to perform. Are you that good yet? You can fiddle around in your room until you’re great, but I suggest knocking on the door of all the edit houses in your area and tell them you’ll work part time for free. Like any job, once they find that they like you they will start paying. Many times this doesn’t take long at all. Also, when I say “like you”, I’m not necessarily talking about your work. If you have a great personality and people like having you around they will hire you for that. Every company wants a good new young worker they don’t have to pay much. Get your experience there and learn learn learn. Once you’ve learned what you need there, and created a demo reel, then get another job that pays because the first one will usually have you stuck at a low wage.

Tip: To get past the receptionist and talk to the guy in charge, email them first and ask about project pricing. The guy in charge will usually email back. Now you have his name, email, and number and can bug the hell out of him for a job. Don’t use your real email address though so he doesn’t know how you got his info.

August 14, 2014 at 6:32 pm in reply to: Weird RAM Preview Problems

I’ve been using AE for twenty years. The slowing down and speeding up effect of the RAM preview seems to be a new problem for me, although the “Needs at least 2 frames to RAM preview” notification problem I’ve had before.
